Murray State Scouting Report
After holding a secret scrimmage against UT Martin (allegedly) last week, the Racers will play their only exhibition game under the lights tonight against Trevecca.
This will be the first time Rechelle Turner will field a team, since before COVID, that won’t have Katelyn Young on the roster — although the program’s all-time leading scorer is now on the bench as part of Turner’s staff. As Turner has said all summer long, there are no Racer post players that have one second of experience playing in a Murray State uniform. Watching them for the first time today will be something to monitor.
The Racer backcourt is led by a trio of veteran guards. Senior guard Briley Pena, along with juniors Halli Poock and Haven Ford will help push the high-tempo Murray State offense. Poock and Ford both earned 2nd Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors. They will shoulder much of the burden for this Racer team not only tonight, but all season long.
Trevecca Scouting Report
Division II Trevecca is in their second season in the Gulf South Conference. They were recently picked to finish 11th in the 12-team GSC. They are now under the leadership of first year head coach Doug Novak, who has more than 250 career wins. Last season, Novak was the associate head coach at George Washington.
Trevecca returns Tatum Shaw, their leading scorer from a season ago. The 5’8 senior guard averaged 10.7 points per game last year.
I’ll have a ‘Ride Home’ podcast posted later tonight.
