WBB: Six Murray State Racers made the 75th-Anniversary team
As the Ohio Valley Conference continues to celebrate their 75th-anniversary, today they released their Women’s Basketball Anniversary Team. Sixty former standouts made the list, including six from Murray State. Here are the Racers who are being honored:
Amber Guffey (2006-09): Guffey was a three-time All-OVC selection, scoring 1,877 points in her career. The 2008 OVC Tournament MVP left Murray State as the program’s leader in assists, made free throws, games played and minutes played.
Ashley Nichole Hayes (2006-09): Hayes was a two-time OVC Player of the Year. She helped lead the Racers to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Her 2,007 career-points are still good for fourth-best in program history.
Ke’Shunan James (2015-18): In 2018, James became just the fourth Racer to be named OVC Women’s Player of the Year. She averaged 21.4 points per game her senior season, which was good for 14th in the country. Her 2,191 points are the second-most in Murray State history.
Joi Scott (2003-07): When she was named the 2007 OVC Player of the Year, Scott was the first Racer to win that award in 20 years. Her 21.1 points per game scoring is the highest average in Murray State history.
Sheila Smith (1986-89): Smith is Murray State’s all-time leading scorer with 2,287 career-points. She was the first woman to have her number retired at Murray State. Smith held ten program records when her playing days were done. She was inducted into Murray State’s Hall of Fame in 1998.
Michelle Wenning (1987-91): Wenning was inducted into Murray State’s Hall of Fame in 2022, and was the seventh women’s player to earn that honor. A four-time All-OVC selection, Wenning scored 1,724 points in her career. She was the fifth Racer to join the 1000-Point Club.
