Smith's first pro season will be in Latvia
MBB: The former Racer guard played the last two seasons at Radford
Former Murray State guard DaQuan Smith has signed his first professional contract with a team in Latvia. Smith will play for Valmiera Glass Via, which is part of the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League.
"This will be DaQuan's first professional year in Europe,” Valmiera Head Coach Nikolajs Mazur said in a statement on the team’s website. “(He) has had a good career in the NCAA and is a good team leader. A player with a good technical arsenal, creates great attacking opportunities, uses one-on-one situations well."
Smith spent four years at Murray State from 2018-22. He played in just three games in the 2018-19 season before a foot injury derailed his season. After earning a medical redshirt, he played three more years with the Racers, starting 38 games in all. Smith scored 458 points and dished out 152 assists in his 93 games in a Murray State uniform.
After the end of the 2021-22 season, Smith transferred to Radford as he joined former Racer assistant Shane Nichols. Smith’s career blossomed at Radford, as he took advantage of the extra COVID year and averaged 14.4 points in his two seasons with the Highlanders. Smith earned 2nd Team All-Big South honors in each of his two seasons at Radford.
On the Valmiera website, Smith had a short message for fans of the team: "I'm excited for this opportunity and I'm ready to work and win games!"
Valmiera’s season is expected to start the first week of October.
