South Florida Head Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim passed away on Thursday at the age of 43. According to a USF news release, Abdur-Rahim was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital when he passed away due to complications that arose during the procedure.
Abdur-Rahim got his coaching career started at Murray State. In the 2006-07 season, he began as a Graduate Assistant before being promoted to a full-time Assistant Coach under Billy Kennedy. Abdur-Rahim had played for Kennedy at Southeastern Louisiana before rejoining him at Murray State.
In today’s podcast, I talk with former Murray State players Jewuan Long and Jeff McClain about their memories of Abdur-Rahim and the impact he had on both of their lives.
Back in 2022, when Abdur-Rahim was the head coach at Kennesaw State, I had a podcast called ‘Coaching Origins’. In it, head coaches talked about their sometimes lengthy journey to getting that first head coaching job. Abdur-Rahim talked a lot about his time at Murray State and how it helped him earn the job at Kennesaw. If you never heard it, you can watch it below.
