Thomas takes JUCO assistant coaching job
MBB: The former Racer walk-on has his first assistant's job in college coaching
Rod Thomas, one of the most beloved walk-ons in the history of Murray State Basketball, posted on social media Friday that he has accepted an assistant coaching job at Daytona State College — a Division I junior college in Daytona Beach, Florida.
After a successful prep career at Paducah Tilghman High School, Thomas walked on at Murray State and played for both Matt McMahon and Steve Prohm. During his senior season, Thomas made one basket — but it was the first bucket of the game on Senior Day against Valparaiso that forever cemented him as one of the Racer Nation’s all-time favorites. (You can see Thomas’ basket in the video below.)
Thomas spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant with McMahon at LSU. Now he’s earned a chance to be an assistant coach for the first time at Daytona State. Thomas will join a Daytona State program that went 28-6 last season, as they advanced to the quarterfinals in the NJCAA tournament.
Good luck Rod!
