Matson hired at New Mexico State
MBB: The Aggie assistant coach was a Graduate Assistant for Billy Kennedy in 2010-11
Former Murray State Graduate Assistant Nick Matson has been hired as an assistant coach at New Mexico State.
"We are thrilled to welcome Nick to our staff,” New Mexico State Head Coach Jason Hooten said in a statement. “I’ve known Nick for nearly 15 years, and over much of that time, he's worked alongside one of my closest friends in the business, Rodney Terry. Nick will be an outstanding fit — both personally for me and for our entire staff and program. Nick is a relentless worker, someone I'd describe as a true grinder and a Swiss Army knife in this profession. He brings passion, versatility, and a deep commitment to our student-athletes, always focused on doing everything possible to help them and our program improve every single day.”

After starting his coaching career as an intern at Stanford, Matson worked at Murray State during the Ohio Valley Conference championship season of 2010-11 under Billy Kennedy. Matson would move on to Fresno State, where he spent seven seasons, working his way up from a graduate assistant to ultimately an assistant coach.
Following stops at UTEP and East Carolina from 2018-23, the 37-year-old Matson worked for Texas Head Coach Rodney Terry the last two seasons as the Director of Basketball Operations and as Assistant Coach.
Matson worked alongside Tim MacAllister on that 2010-11 Murray State staff, as MacAllister was a manager on that team. MacAllister just earned his first collegiate head coaching position at the College of Coastal Georgia.
